Escaping Libya's detention industry

18.05.2026

Den Haag

Screening + discussion

Monday 18 May 2026, 18h CEST | De Onderstroom, Paviljoensgracht 18, Den Haag

Join us for a screening of Escaping Libya’s Detention Industry, a film by @forensis.berlin in collaboration with @libyanjustice, followed by a discussion with members of @refugeesinlibya who have survived detention and rights violations in the country.

Panellists:
– David Yambio and Lam Magok | Refugees in Libya)
– Phoebe Walton | Forensis
– Allison West | ECCHR
– Mehdi Ben Youssef | Lawyers for Justice in Libya

The event is held in solidarity with survivors of crimes against humanity committed against people on the move in Libya, some of whom are in the Hague later this month to attend the start of the case of Khaled Mohamed Ali El Hishri at the International Criminal Court.

Legal proceedings are also soon to begin in Zwolle, against an Eritrean human trafficker for alleged crimes in the Libyan town of Bani Walid.

These proceedings are milestones in the struggle for justice for survivors of Libya’s brutal detention industry; but they must be the start of a broader reckoning—for crimes including torture, enslavement, sexual violence, and killing.

This even will explore Europe’s role enabling and sustaining Libya’s detention industry through externalised borders, Frontex cooperation, and pull- and push-back practices at sea.
